China’s Box Office Faces Significant Decline in 2024

In 2024, China’s box office revenue experienced a substantial decline, reflecting challenges within the entertainment industry.

Revenue Statistics

According to the China Film Administration, box office revenue fell by 22.6% compared to the previous year, totaling 42.502 billion yuan ($5.82 billion). This figure is also 34% lower than the pre-pandemic peak in 2019.

Domestic Film Performance

Revenue from domestic films decreased by 27.3% year-over-year, indicating a significant downturn in local film production and consumption.

Industry Challenges

The industry is struggling to recover fully from the pandemic, facing issues such as a reduced number of feature film productions, competition from online platforms, and an economic slowdown. In 2024, 612 films were produced, down from 792 in 2023. Urban theater audiences also declined to 1.01 billion.

Foreign Film Highlights

Despite the overall downturn, foreign films like “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” and “The Boy and the Heron” stood out after a year dominated by local productions.
