Trump ‘Struggles to Stay Awake’ During Cabinet Meeting as Cameras Roll

President Donald Trump faced a fresh wave of public scrutiny on Tuesday after cameras captured him appearing to struggle to stay awake during a televised cabinet meeting, only minutes after declaring he was “sharper than I was 25 years ago.”

The moment unfolded as Trump opened the meeting by criticizing media reports that raised questions about his stamina and mental acuity during his second term. He singled out The New York Times, which recently published a detailed assessment suggesting the president had slowed down and become less energetic compared to earlier years.

Trump pushed back aggressively, calling the reporting “ridiculous,” and insisting he was in “excellent physical and mental health.”

Yet as cabinet secretaries began delivering lengthy updates on their portfolios, broadcast footage showed Trump closing his eyes for long, still stretches, including moments where he appeared motionless as though drifting in and out of sleep.

Cameras Capture Long Pauses and Drooping Eyes

The president’s posture changed noticeably as the meeting continued. While earlier in the session he frequently gestured and responded to comments, the 79-year-old grew increasingly passive as officials spoke.

Multiple camera angles showed Trump’s eyes drooping or shut, particularly during appearances by the commerce, agriculture, and treasury secretaries.

The most talked-about exchange came during remarks from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who sat directly beside Trump. A close-range camera, pointed at both men, highlighted the president’s prolonged stillness and several seconds of apparent dozing while Rubio spoke about U.S. diplomatic priorities.

Clips from the meeting quickly spread on social media, with phrases like “Sleepy Don,” “dozing president,” and “he’s nodding off again” trending on TikTok, X, and Instagram.

White House Denies Trump Fell Asleep

The White House forcefully rejected the notion that the president nodded off. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump was “listening attentively throughout a three-hour marathon meeting” and “demonstrated total command of the room.”

Leavitt criticized the viral clips as “misleading edits designed to demean the president” and emphasized that Trump answered questions from reporters and cabinet members afterward.

“We have a president who is deeply engaged with critical national issues,” she said. “Anyone suggesting otherwise should check their facts rather than rely on TikTok videos.”

Second Incident Sparks Political Irony

The episode has revived debate about Trump’s age and stamina, particularly because of his long history of mocking Joe Biden as “Sleepy Joe” during the 2020 campaign and beyond.
Trump repeatedly said that a commander-in-chief caught dozing off on camera would be “unfit” and “embarrassing for the country.”

It is the second recent incident fueling those optics. On November 6, footage showed Trump appearing sluggish and fighting to keep his eyes open during an Oval Office event lasting nearly 20 minutes.
That clip went viral and triggered online speculation about whether the president is experiencing fatigue, health issues, or simply long working days.

Political analysts note that, while occasional drowsiness is not unusual for someone nearing 80, the images carry added significance due to heightened partisan messaging around age, competence, and presidential fitness.

The footage arrives at a moment when Trump is under pressure from critics within both parties, amid ongoing disputes over immigration policy, foreign affairs, and the handling of domestic unrest.
