What to Know About Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’ Running Mate

Tim Walz Joins Kamala Harris as Running Mate

Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential running mate. Walz, 60, brings a blend of political expertise, appeal across suburban and rural areas, and progressive values that could help the Democrats secure a 2024 victory against Trump and Vance.

Walz’s Background

Born and raised in Nebraska, Walz’s career includes teaching positions on a Native American reservation, in China, Nebraska, and Minnesota. He’s a veteran, having enlisted in the Army National Guard at 17. Walz entered politics in 2006, winning a traditionally Republican district in Minnesota, and served six terms in the House.

Political Achievements

As governor since 2019, Walz has championed Democratic priorities such as raising the federal minimum wage, protecting abortion rights, and supporting the Affordable Care Act. He has served on the House Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, and Armed Services Committees.

Personal Life and Education

Walz is married to Gwen Walz and has two children. He holds a bachelor’s degree in social science education from Chadron State College and a master’s in educational leadership from Minnesota State University Mankato.

Electoral Success

Walz won the gubernatorial race in 2018 and was re-elected in 2022. If Harris and Walz win the 2024 election, Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan would complete his term as governor of Minnesota.
