Zelensky Warns of Russian Plans to Attack Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plants

On 26 September 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a dire warning to the international community, claiming that Russia is planning targeted attacks on Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Zelensky, speaking from Kyiv, urged global leaders, including the United States, to intervene and prevent what could be a catastrophic escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Zelensky’s warning comes amid a renewed Russian offensive in Eastern Ukraine, where tensions have remained high since the initial invasion in 2022. Ukrainian intelligence reports suggest that Russia may target critical energy infrastructure, including nuclear plants, in an attempt to cripple the country’s power grid ahead of the winter months.

The Biden administration has been quick to respond, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken calling for immediate discussions with NATO allies about reinforcing Ukraine’s defenses. The situation has further strained US-Russia relations, already at an all-time low due to continued sanctions and diplomatic confrontations.
