Trump Slams Washington’s Likely Next Mayor, Escalates Political Clash Over D.C. Future

Washington, D.C. — Tensions between the White House and the nation’s capital leadership escalated sharply this weekend as Donald Trump launched a fresh attack on Washington’s presumptive next mayor, while simultaneously promoting sweeping redevelopment plans across the city’s most iconic landmarks.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump criticized Janeese Lewis George, who recently secured a decisive win in the Democratic mayoral primary. Her victory places her in a strong position heading into November’s general election in the heavily Democratic capital.

“Communist” Label Sparks Political Firestorm

Trump described Lewis George as a “communist adherent,” warning she would “destroy the capital city” if elected. The remarks immediately fueled debate online, especially given that the mayoral candidate has identified as a democratic socialist rather than a communist.

The former president has increasingly used the term “communist” in recent political commentary, previously applying it to multiple Democratic primary winners in New York. Among those mentioned was Zohran Mamdani, whom Trump also labeled as part of a “radical left” movement.

Despite the rhetoric, Trump confirmed he intends to meet Lewis George, signaling that direct engagement between the two sides may still take place ahead of the election cycle.

Reflecting Pool Claims and Security Controversy

In a second lengthy post, Trump defended his past efforts to “beautify” Washington, D.C., highlighting renovations to the National Mall, including the Reflecting Pool near the Lincoln Memorial.

He claimed the water feature had been upgraded with an “American flag blue” coating designed for swimming pools. However, reports have noted that the coating has begun to peel, with algae returning and turning the water green—an issue that has surfaced repeatedly in past maintenance cycles.

Trump blamed what he called “Criminal, Radical Left Vandals” for damaging the pool’s surface. However, officials from the National Park Service previously stated that five individuals had been arrested in connection with vandalism incidents, though no broader evidence has been publicly detailed linking organized groups to the damage.

According to Trump, the Reflecting Pool will now be drained and repaired after the July 4th holiday, which marks 250 years of American independence.

Major Golf Course Overhaul Plan Announced

Beyond downtown Washington landmarks, Trump also unveiled plans to overhaul East Potomac Golf Links, a municipal course located on an island in the Potomac River.

After visiting the site, he described it as “dilapidated” and “very dangerous,” but said it offers “unparalleled views of D.C.’s monuments” and strong potential for transformation.

He proposed converting it into what he called one of the “greatest golf courses anywhere in the world,” suggesting it could eventually host major tournaments, including the U.S. Open.

The proposal adds to a growing list of redevelopment ideas Trump has floated for the capital since returning to office, many of which reflect a strong focus on architecture and large-scale public spaces.

Expanding Vision for the Capital’s Landscape

Since the beginning of his second term, Trump has pushed multiple high-profile construction concepts across Washington, including the demolition of the White House East Wing for a planned ballroom and the suggestion of a monumental arch near Arlington National Cemetery.

Supporters describe the initiatives as bold modernization efforts aimed at enhancing national pride and tourism. Critics, however, argue the proposals reflect a personal imprint on federally significant landmarks and raise questions about historical preservation and urban planning authority.

As political tensions rise and redevelopment plans continue to surface, Washington remains at the center of a broader national debate over identity, governance, and the future of America’s most symbolic city.
